All the images above were taken using natural window light as a main light source and a daylight studio lamp and a reflector to add some dramatic shadows and some catch lights when needed … All shot with a combination of a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens and a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens on a Canon 7D.

Symmetrical Spoon by Jonathan Wignall

Image

My brief was to photograph a symmetrical object, so, after much thought, I decided that a regular kitchen serving spoon would do the trick. I was careful to get the lighting, as well as the framing, symmetrical and used white card as reflectors around the spoon. I utilised natural lighting through the Loft window and the background was yellow card to contrast with the black of the spoon head.

Strawberry Fun at the Loft A Offices…

Just add fruit!!!

Just something I came up with using a old aquarium and a strawberry from my lunch box…..and of course some added water….

Black card set 20 inches from rear of fish tank as background and a table lamp each side of the fish tank pointing downwards to light top of fruit and a reflector beneath the tank to bounce light upwards to illuminate bottom of fruit..(be careful of water and electricity…obviously)

An easy and fun project to do on a rainy day….

Tenba Expands Roadie Video Bag Series

New larger Roadie II video bags accommodate bigger cameras and Rigs

Leading the way in carrying solutions for over 30 years, Tenbaannounces that it has expanded their popular Roadie II video bag series with two new larger sizes. The new Roadie Video Backpack and Roadie Shoulder Bag will be about 20 percent larger than the bags that were launched earlier this year. Both bags are designed to fit the latest digital camera / video systems, including DSLRs from Canon (5D Mark III, EOS-1D X) and Nikon (D4, D800), and larger gear from RED (Epic, Scarlet), Canon (C100/C300/C500) and Sony (FS100/FS700), along with a laptop and a full assortment of accessories.

The new larger sized bags include the same video-specific features as the existing Roadie Video bags, which are designed to meet the demands of image makers who switch between DSLR and full-size video camera systems. Features include monopod/shotgun mic pockets, quick-access audio compartments, padded integrated laptop storage, wide, unobstructed openings, oversized pockets for large batteries, hard drives and cables, and much more.

“After launching the first two Roadie Video Bags, we received many requests for larger sized bags that would fit bigger lenses, larger rigs and longer rails,” said Jan Lederman, President of MAC Group. “We worked with filmmakers to ensure the new bags would meet their specific size requirements.”

The larger Roadie II Video Backpack and Shoulder Bag will be available in January 2013. To find more information about Roadies, and to see a full video demonstration of all Tenba products, visit www.tenba.com .

Hasselblad opens its new design centre in Italy

Headed by Luca Alessandrini, the company’s New Business Development Director, the centre, with its base close to Venice and the Italian fashion industry, will implement Hasselblad’s new strategy to gain market share in new consumer segments with products that boast exceptional design and engineering.

Hasselblad Chairman and CEO Dr. Larry Hansen said: “The region we have chosen for this new centre of design excellence is home to many high-tech manufacturers, including those working in the watch, high end automobile and aerospace industries.”

“We plan to capitalise on having the best of both worlds with this new Italian centre and our traditional Swedish camera manufacturing expertise.”

The first Hasselblad product designed in Italy is Lunar, the company’s luxury mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera, launched at photokina. For the first time ever Hasselblad is incorporating carbon fiber, titanium, wood, leather and precious metals in this state-of-the-art camera, which is set for launch early next year.

The company has announced it is also planning to build a new DSLR, a new compact camera, and its own line of accessories, bags and tripods.

Blue is the Colour (Chart!) by Jonathan Wignall

Image

I was set a challenge to produce a photograph to the theme of “Blue” I decided to take this close up shot of a paint colour chart, using a Nikkor 105mm macro lens on my D700. The shot was taken in the Loft with our newly acquired light tent and continuous lights with daylight bulbs, perfect for product photography. I carefully focussed on the word “blue” to emphasise the subject theme with the lens set at its shallowest depth of field; f/2.8.

Hasselblad Masters 2012…

The entire imaging community knows that the Hasselblad Masters programme represents photography at its finest; at its most inspired, most communicative, most beautiful. And now the two month-long, three continents-wide Masters Winners Tour 2012 is underway.

The tour comprises six worldwide events; it launched in Tokyo, switches to New York City (October 25/26), to Los Angeles (November 17) then Berlin (November 22) followed by London (November 29) and finishes in Shanghai (December 7).

And photographers and admirers of high quality photography can register online (on a first come, first served basis) to attend these free and exclusive events, which showcase the winners of the Hasselblad Masters 2012 competition. Each event will provide an opportunity to ‘get your hands on a Hasselblad’ and meet and socialise with the Hasselblad Masters 2012 winners and Masters from previous years.

For more information and to register online for one of the events, please visit:www.hasselbladmasters.com

The winners of the 2012 competition were: Architectural: Frank Meyl, Germany; Editorial: Jon Lowenstein, USA; Fashion/Beauty: Wai Kuen Eric Wong, Hong Kong; Fine Art: Olivier Valsecchi, France; General: Ken Hermann, Denmark; Landscapes/Nature: Tom D. Jones, Belgium; Portrait: Denis Rouvre, France; Products: Joe Felzman, USA; Up & Coming: Vicente Ansola, Spain; Wedding/Social: Milosz Wozaczynski, Poland; Wildlife: Joachim Schmeisser, Germany.

They were selected from 110 finalists across eleven categories and from over 2,500 applications. Each winner received a trophy from Hasselblad Chairman and CEO Dr. Larry Hansen and Paul Waterworth, Hasselblad’s Global Photographer Relations Manager at the recent photokina trade fair event in Cologne, Germany.

Earlier in the year the winners were equipped with a Hasselblad H4D Camera, associated lenses and Phocus software to enable them to fulfill a specific shoot theme: EVOKE. The resultant images based on this subject were then galleried at a photokina exhibition and published in the exclusive Hasselblad Masters Book Vol. 3.

Said Paul Waterworth: “Photographers across the planet tell us there is no photographic competition quite like the Hasselblad Masters. It enjoys an exclusive cachet within the imaging industry and in the hearts of photography enthusiasts the world over. Our subject theme this year produced a truly stunning set of images, which are now available in book form and will be part of the worldwide tour this autumn.

Now we look forward to the next Masters Competition in 2014.”
